The podcast was an interview with David Grohl, who was the drummer from Nirvana and started his own band, the Foo Fighters. He has many different styles in his music from soft, acoustic sounds to harsh, screaming, chaos sometimes in the same song. David Grohl is the main dude, he's a gutiarist, drummer, singer, and song writer.
Grohl finds current events as inspiration to his music. Inpsiration can hit you anywhere to the point where you have to scribble an idea anywhere. Grohl has written lyrics on napkins. There was one story about some miners that were trapped underground for days and one of the trapped miners asked for the "In Your Honor" album (which is my personal favorite). It blew his mind that his music touched someone that much so he wrote an instrumental song dedicated to them, " Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners". I like it because it reminds me of some old country song, like a Johnny Cash sound.
"Smells like Team Spirit" was a song that launched Nirvana to major fame. Grohl said, "i could support myself, doing what i loved to do" when he described those first days. I think it would be a great feeling when an artist realizes that they have made it. To be able to support yourself with talent and doing something you love to do is priceless. Not every artist has that luxury. Another famous musical artist, Ella Fitzgerald once said,"Just don't give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don't think you can go wrong."
On the Foo Fighter's latest album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, Grohl learned how to play piano. He just picked up the techniques and came up with a great song. It doesn't sound like a typical Foo Fighters song but it's a nice change.
I liked this podcast because it's not your typical interview. It was deeper and you got to listen to David Grohl talk about his experiances with Nirvana, remember Kurt Cobain, starting Foo Fighters, and brag about his daughter. It was interesting to hear about parts of his creative process.
